There is NO other workshop like this one. This is the world's FIRST and
ONLY WISP workshop that addresses specific real-world WISP needs in a vendor-neutral
fashion. Since 2001, Jack Unger and InfoNet Inc, have trained over 800 people
across the country.
Based
on the book, “Deploying License-Free Wireless Wide-Area Networks” by Jack
Unger, this workshop provides complete, real-world "start-to-finish" design,
installation, operation, and support information for wireless ISPs
and other organizations deploying outdoor wireless WANs-including
coverage of 802.11a, 802.11b, 802.11g, and proprietary-protocol networks.
ABOUT THE WORKSHOP
- Vendor Neutrality - It's important to choose
your wireless equipment based on your needs and on actual equipment performance.
This workshop shows you how to look beyond the advertising "hype".
Since the presenter doesn't sell wireless equipment he can therefore can
help you evaluate the good (and the not-so-good) points about every make
of wireless equipment.
- Unique Real-World Content - Wireless InfoNet
Inc. has been building and troubleshooting broadband wireless networks since
1993.
(They may actually be the oldest broadband wireless design/consulting/training
company in existence - Did we mention that they "wrote the book"
on wireless ISP operation?) This workshop is based on literally hundreds
of broadband wireless projects and installations. You will learn to identify
and solve the difficult real-world problems (for example - Interference!)
that other workshops don’t even mention!
- Two-Way - This is NOT a boring lecture.
It's a continual two-way interactive learning experience. Bring
your questions and ask them! Share your learning and your experience
with others. You will leave with the knowledge and the confidence
that you need to succeed in the WISP business. (No other workshop
can provide this - they just don't have the experience).
- Follow-up Assistance - After your workshop,
you and your employees receive follow-up telephone consulting and
support at NO ADDITIONAL COST. We also provide follow-up on-site
consulting if you so desire.

WORKSHOP CONTENTS
- Introductions: Introductions and overview.
- The "Real World" -
What is it?: Outdoor networks are not "plug and play". Understand
the challenges of deploying a wireless network outdoors. Learn
about the "real-world" issues like line-of-sight, fresnel
zone, terrain, trees, weather, noise, and interference from other
networks.
- Fundamentals of WISP Success: Learn how
to minimize cost, deliver reliable service, select equipment, manage
your customers expectations, and deal with local wireless competitors.
Learn what has worked for other wireless operators and what has
not worked.
- Understanding Wireless Principles: Your
understanding of wireless principles is the foundation that you
use when you build your wireless business. Learn about wireless
propagation. Learn how to work with dBs, calculate power levels
and link budgets, measure fade margin, and keep the fresnel zone
clear. Understand when to use direct-sequence spread spectrum and
when to use frequency-hopping spread spectrum equipment and when
to use them both. Learn how to evaluate performance claims for "non-line-of-sight" (NLOS)
equipment.
- Antenna Selection and Design: Antennas
are the single most important part of a wireless system because
they determine your service area and at the same time, they expose
you to interference. Learn antenna principles so you can select
the proper antennas based on gain, beamwidth, and polarization
needs. Learn about mounting height, downtilt, and diversity.
- The Installation Process: An efficient
low-cost installation process is crucial to your success. Learn
antenna mounting techniques, cable selection, waterproofing, lightning
protection, tower safety, and tower leasing. Learn how to build
serviceable networks and how to test and monitor your completed
installations.
- Equipment Selection: Ask questions about
different equipment advantages and disadvantages. Now you will
be able to apply your knowledge of wireless principles, real-world
issues, installation issues, and marketing hype, to choose the
best equipment for your market area, interference environment,
and budget.
- Network Design Principles: Poor network
design causes many time-consuming problems. Avoid this frustration
by learning effective network design principles. Learn to design
sectored networks, select low-noise access point locations, reuse
frequencies, manage bandwidth, build repeaters, and scale your
network up to serve more users.
- Reducing Interference and Noise: You
must understand the techniques used to minimize noise and interference.
Learn the causes of interference and how to apply noise-reduction
techniques. Get a hands-on demonstration of how to use a spectrum
analyzer to evaluate the level of noise and interference before
you commit to locating your access point on a specific site.
- Putting it all Together - WISP Success:
Learn how to determine your "overselling" ratio, evaluate
the profitability of selling wireless service, find skilled employees,
proactively monitor your network, build customer loyalty, provide
network security, interpret FCC rules, and evaluate emerging wireless
technologies.
Notes: Questions and answers encouraged at all times. Spectrum analyzer
use and site survey training included. Spreadsheet tools demonstrated
and distributed.
ABOUT WORKSHOP PRESENTER
JACK UNGER
Jack
Unger, the Founder and President Wireless InfoNet, Inc has been serving
the broadband wireless industry for the past eleven years. Since 1993,
he has designed, built, and provided support for hundreds of outdoor
wireless WANs and wireless ISP (WISP) networks. In 2001 he created
the world’s first vendor-neutral WISP training and deployment
seminar which he presents at public and private sessions around the
country as well as at wireless industry trade shows. In 2003 he authored
the first-ever book for the license-free wireless WAN industry, “Deploying
License-Free Wireless WANs”. This vendor-neutral handbook (published
by Cisco Press) helps WISPs successfully build and operate reliable
outdoor license-free wireless networks. Mr. Unger currently provides
consulting services, network engineering, WISP design and deployment
training, wireless site surveys, and on-site network troubleshooting
for WISPs nationwide.
In addition to Mr. Unger’s eleven years of broadband wireless
service, his career includes fourteen years with telecommunications
giants ROLM, IBM, Siemens, and NEC in California’s “Silicon
Valley”. Before his work in the telecommunications industry,
Mr. Unger sold wireless communications equipment, including radio and
television broadcast station equipment for seven years. Jack credits
his advancement in the broadband wireless field to his original “initiation” into
wireless as an amateur radio operator at the age of eleven.
Jack has earned AA, AS, and BA degrees, holds FCC Amateur Extra and
General Radiotelephone licenses, as well as an FAA Private Pilot license.
From 1990 until 2001 Jack served as a volunteer Firefighter and Emergency
