CONFERENCE LUNCHEON: From Connection to Protection: The Future of ISPs
Gone are the days when all an ISP needed to do was provide a reliable Internet connection for its customers. With all of the dangers that now lurk on the Net, ISPs have recently had to adopt the additional focus of protecting customers from insidious online phenomena like spam, pop-ups, spyware and phishers, and ultimately from becoming victims of identity theft. As the CIO of EarthLink, Linda Beck is aggressively working towards making the Internet a safer place, and will discuss with her peers the responsibility that ISPs have to safeguard the online experience and prevent consumers from completely losing faith in the Internet as a valuable research and communication tool. Linda Beck, Executive Vice President - Operations, EarthLink

KEYNOTE: WiMAX? Why NOT?
The traditional data access model for urban and industrial areas has always been that the incumbent Telco owns the copper, sets the tariff and therefore pretty much controls both the speed and the cost of access. Even if you use a third-party vendor to buy access, the copper is still typically owned by the Telco. The resultant effect is that high-speed Internet access is rarely available at affordable rates.
WiMAX is the first widely backed non-wire line standard that is both technically capable and has sufficient industry support to turn the Telco connectivity stranglehold on its head.
Voice and data delivery over WiMAX promises to afford greater access speeds, faster deployment and all at a much lower cost than is typically available today from the local LEC. WiMAX really is the great wireless hope and has sufficient pre-launch traction and excitement to ensure a rapid deployment once the hardware becomes commercially available.
Matrix Networks Nigel Ballard 'WiMAX, Why Not?' keynote will discuss the impact this exciting new wireless standard will have, what it means to traditional carriers, customers and the eager start-ups waiting in the wings.Nigel Ballard, Director of Wireless, Matrix Networks
