BitTorrent, Direct Connect and the Next Generation of Bandwidth Hogs
Service providers have spent the last two years in a battle against the networking costs resulting from the popularity of file-sharing protocols like KaZaA. But the P2P threat has evolved dramatically. Service providers must now control traffic originating from new protocols, BitTorrent and Direct Connect, which have exploded onto the Internet and now account for most of the bandwidth consumption on DOCSIS networks. As the P2P technological environment evolves, traditional attempts at shaping or “squeezing” file-sharing traffic are proving to be inappropriate. QoS and Peering for VoIP/SIP Services
In order to truly deliver end-to-end QoS for your voice services, you'll need to understand and manage two primary elements: the local access portion at both ends of the network where bandwidth contention occurs and peering. How is VoIP Peering different from IP Peering and the interrelationship to ENUM based directory services? Conventional IP Peering is based on understood rules of exchanging traffic. VoIP peering introduces new elements that is an N-squared problem of potential 'peers' required, plus issues such as QoS, Jitter, Latency, Packet Loss become much more significant than with conventional peering. Where one physically peers (neutral IXP's, NAP's) and buys transit becomes a key consideration. And unlike DNS, which provides a global, single name space for the Internet, the issue of VoIP directory services is evolving. We'll make sense of it all and help you raise the bar... at both ends.

Leveraging Open Source Tools for Email Systems
From ClamAV to Greylisting, DSPAM, Squirrel, Q and Proc, there is an extensive number open source options to help you control the chaos formerly known as an MTA. We'll pan through the solid utility picks, must-have tools and methods, and help you save time by avoiding the has-beens or would-be projects that aren't quite ready for prime time in a hosting or ISP environment. Greylisting in particular is a relatively unknown low-maintenance, high-performance spam prevention system which has an extremely low instance of false positives. While consuming very little in the way of system resources, it can reject 80% or more of the spam before it gets onto your mail server, allowing more expensive anti-spam measures to be employed on the spam that does make it through.
