Conference Roundtable Luncheon - Solving Spam by Introducing Sender Accountability

There are no lack of attempts at eradicating spam. From blacklists to whitelists, from spam trap networks to baysian filters and from self regulation to state legislation, creative minds are hard at work attempting to outsmart the spammers. The problem is that so far the proposed solutions all address the symptoms, not the cause of this plague. And, there are equally many spammers whose business model and survival relies on outsmarting mail administrators and statistical filtering models alike. In short there is no silver bullet. Yet this problem can be solved. How? By changing the way senders send and receivers receive email. Hans Peter Brondmo will discuss an approach that addresses the spam problem by attacking it at the source. He will propose migrating to a trust architecture where it becomes difficult to impossible to send high volume email without proper authentication and where a senders performance is monitored and scored by independent third parties. The result, legitimate senders willing to identify themselves and follow the rules are held accountable for what they send making it much easier to put the bad guys (deceptive spammers) out of business. Following his presentation Brondmo will lead a discussion amongst the audience to solicit their input, thoughts and perspectives. Open to conference attendees.

Speaker: Hans Peter Brondmo, SVP Strategy & Corporate Development, Digital Impact Fellows, Author

Vendor Session -- Leveraging Service Control to Improve Customer Satisfaction- ELLACOYA NETWORKS

The increased use of peer-to-peer (P2P) applications is consuming up to 70% of network capacity at peak times. Consequently, interactive users (web surfers, e-mailers, etc.), that comprise approximately 90% the subscriber base, are experiencing poor service levels. This session will illustrate by case study how service control technology ensures that both interactive and P2P users remain happy customers and how the technology provides the foundation for successful tiered service/pricing plans.

Speaker: Varun Nagaraj Executive VP, Product Strategy and Management Ellacoya Networks

 3:00-4:00pm

Vendor Session -- SpamSquelcher: Reversing the Parasitic Economics of Spam - ePRIVACY GROUP

SpamSquelcher is a new category of network device that reduces the financial impact of spam on Internet Service Providers. The patent-pending product enables ISPs to control bandwidth, server capacity, and support costs created by spam. Using dynamic, intelligent sampling and analysis of network traffic, SpamSquelcher shapes email traffic to prioritize legitimate email and dramatically slow the flow of spam. For the first time, real-time control of the use of resources by spammers enables immediate ISP cost savings and breaks the link between increased spam volume and increased ISP spending. The product also prohibitively increases the cost to the spammer of delivering to protected networks, attacking the heart of their parasitic business model.

Speakers: David Brussin, CTO and Michael Smalls VP sales

Vendor Session - - More than just Anti-Spam - Correcting ISP Resource Theft - - VANQUISH

ISPs provide services to access the largest, most comprehensive content delivery system in history. Yet with every other media outlet such as television, radio, or even the postal service, the carrier is compensated for access to their resources, their technology, and their customers whenever a third party interjects an unsolicited message. It is this very compensation that controls access to the channel and - more importantly - supports the very resources that are being expended to deliver the message.

Take a peek into exciting new technology that ISPs are implementing to address "Resource Compensation Control". Never before offered to ISPs, this technology puts a stop to unsolicited network abuse. No filtering, no maintenance, no support. Just turn it on and watch it work for your business.

Speaker: Frank Urro, Principal and Founder

Vendor Session - Understanding and Using SIP to Deliver Profitable Voice Services - sentitO NETWORKS

Session Initiation Protocol (SIP) is currently being widely deployed by service providers around the world to simplify the delivery of voice, data, and multimedia services directly to subscribers. Additionally, many ISPs are beginning to look at SIP as they consider offering Voice over IP services to increase average revenue per subscriber and reduce customer churn. SIP promises ISPs the ability to offer customized, bundled voice services, tailored to both their residential and business subscribers—services such as IP Centrex, and Unified Messaging.

In this educational presentation, you will first be provided an overview of next-generation networks. Then, you will learn about and understand SIP's background and prowess as a cost-effective, scalable, signaling protocol. You will also learn about network architectures that utilize SIP and how these compare in cost and benefit to architectures that rely on MGCP, H.248, H.323 and other prominent call control protocols. This presentation will also detail how SIP can be used to interact directly with the SS7 network to ensure the smooth connection of off-net calls. Specific service provider implementations will be highlighted to show both the practical business applications and revenue potential of SIP-based architectures.

Speaker: Peter Nilsson, Director of Systems Engineering
